1 Corinthians 3:1-2

"Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit but as people who are still worldly—mere infants in Christ. I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready."

Ephesians 4:14-15

"Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ."

The Big Idea

There's a difference between being a Christian and being a mature Christian. A baby Christian lives on milk — the elementary truths — and stays dependent on others to feed them. A mature Christian has trained themselves to distinguish good from evil, feeds on solid food, and takes responsibility for their own growth. The goal of the gospel isn't just to get you into heaven; it's to grow you up into the full stature of Christ. Many believers have been saved for years but are still spiritual infants — still drinking milk, still tossed about by every wind of teaching, still needing someone else to chew their food for them. God's invitation is better than before: to grow up, take ownership, and become mature in Christ. Maturity isn't about how long you've been saved; it's about whether you're still growing.

Knowledge — moving beyond the elementary truths to feed on solid food and train yourself to discern good from evil.

Talk It Through

1

Would you describe yourself right now as a baby Christian or a mature Christian? What evidence would you point to?

2

Read 1 Corinthians 3:1-2. Are you still living on 'milk' — the elementary truths — or have you moved on to 'solid food'? What would solid food look like for you?

3

Hebrews 5:14 says the mature have 'trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.' What's one area where you're still unsure what God would have you do?

4

Ephesians 4:14 warns against being 'tossed by every wind of teaching.' Have you ever been swayed by a popular idea that turned out to be wrong? What did it teach you?

5

Whose responsibility is your spiritual growth — yours, your pastor's, or God's? How do they work together?

6

What is one habit you could start this week that would move you from infancy toward maturity?

7

Colossians 1:28 says the goal is to present everyone 'fully mature in Christ.' What would 'fully mature' look like in your life a year from now?

Simple Daily Action

Identify one area where you've been staying on 'milk.' Take one concrete step toward 'solid food' today — read a chapter beyond your usual, study a topic you've avoided, or ask a mature believer a hard question.

Power Reminder

God didn't save you to keep you an infant. He saved you to grow you up. Move from milk to solid food — maturity is the goal.
